Sebastian Vettel led Mark Webber in a Red Bull one-two as the team completed its domination of the final part of the 2009 season by winning the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The result also confirmed Vettel as championship runner-up behind Jenson Button (Brawn), who took only his second podium of the second half of the year in third, right behind Webber after a fraught late battle.
Pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton had to retire early with brake problems.
The outgoing champion had been tipped to dominate following his absolute command of qualifying and much of practice, but looked vulnerable from the outset. He was unable to get away from the two Red Bulls, and had difficulty slowing his McLaren from the early stages, even before his team radioed him to warn of a right rear brake issue.
The Brawns were also able to match Hamilton’s pace, with Rubens Barrichello falling behind Button on the opening lap after losing a chunk of front wing in a Turn 1 brush with Webber.
Hamilton stayed ahead of Webber at the first stops, but Read the rest of this entry »

Jean Todt is the new FIA president after comfortably winning Friday’s election in Paris.

The former Ferrari team principal had been up against former world rally Ari Vatanen for the top job within motor racing’s governing body.
Todt got 135 votes compared to Vatanen’s 49. There were 12 abstentions or invalid votes.
The entire voting procedure was supervised by an external Huissier de Justice, the French state-appointed public witness.
The victory means he will succeed outgoing president Max Mosley, who made it clear from the outset that he wanted Todt to win the vote.

Jenson Button clinched the 2009 Formula 1 world championship by coming through to fifth in the Brazilian Grand Prix, as Mark Webber took a comfortable victory for Red Bull.

Sebastian Vettel made it up to fourth from 15th on the grid, but that was not enough to keep his title bid alive, while Button’s closest rival and Brawn team-mate Rubens Barrichello was only running fourth when he had to pit with a puncture eight laps from the end, ending his last remote hope of the championship.
The result also gave Brawn a remarkable Constructors’ Championship title in the team’s first year, less than 12 months after Honda’s departure left its staff facing an apparently bleak future.
Behind Webber, Robert Kubica (BMW) took his best result of the year in second, and Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) came through from the tail of the field for third.
Button and Vettel’s charges were immediately aided by Read the rest of this entry »
